Dear Andrea Galierikova, From the coordinator: The follow-up project of COMPETING, 1System4IWT Learning, is underway for more than a year and a half now. Since the newsletter of last Summer a lot has happened. |

|
A train-the-expert event on interconnectivity and creating learning modules was organized by CERONAV in Romania in the first week of October 2023. Under the lead of FHOO from Austria the partners have been trained in the basics as well as the more advanced steps of developing e-learning materials for INeS (“Inland Navigation eLearning System”). Part of that event was a teachers’ canteen. This Community of Practice event focused on two topics: a keynote on cybersecurity & explanation of the INeS forum functionality (communication and collaboration tools).
|
December last year EACEA had commissioned BDO to conduct a full ‘on the spot’ audit of the files of the previous COMPETING project. No findings were reported to the lead partner.
Last January an IT VET student finalized his internship at STC. He has been working on laying the basis of the new website for the project: https://www.1s4iwt.eu/ |
Earlier this month a combined train-the-trainer/train-the-expert event was organized by FHOO in Steyr (please read the full article related to this event below).
Spring season has arrived. STC is looking back on prosperous cooperation within this partnership. Wishing you all, apart from working hard on the deliverables, beautiful Spring days to enjoy together with your loved ones. Stay safe and happy. Jan Smallegange, project manager |

Currently, there is no formal structure and/or culture for permanent education in the inland navigation sector. Equipment and technology used on inland navigation vessels are getting more and more complex and innovative. Therefore, inland navigation companies are looking to hire more specialized and qualified crew members.
The goal of WP 2 - Skills gaps research and gaps in legislation implementation is to create a resilient, easily accessible and future-proof education & training system for the IWT sector.
This builds upon results of previous projects (i.e. Danube SKILLS project, Prominent, PLATINA 3, etc.). CERONAV, as WP2 leader, based on the latest information received from EDINNA, from consultation with stakeholders conducted via online questionnaires and interviews and based on the outcomes of CESNI, identified the state of play on the transposition and implementation of Directive (EU) 2017/2397 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 12 December 2017 on the recognition of professional qualifications in inland navigation.
Needed competencies and permanent adaptation of professional competencies of crew members, due to implementation of innovative technologies (zero emission operation, new fuels, new engines, new propulsion systems, semi-automated mooring etc.) and digitalization in the IWT sector, have also been taken into account.
In order to go further and have updated results and a permanent impact on the sector environment, a methodology for future repetition of assessment was developed as a tool for each country to be able to evaluate their state of play periodically or when obvious/significant changes are considered to be brought to the IWT environment.
Also an inventory of competencies needed in the IWT sector, including new ones due to innovative technologies and updated/newly developed standards for competencies for new jobs on board IWT vessels, was made in order to support the work of CESNI, committed to regularly revise existing standards and to adopt new standards while following closely technical evolutions and supporting innovation, as a permanent priority and common objective of safe and sustainable inland navigation.
The work continues and we are quite pleased to be part of this team, which is very active, cooperating and full of useful resources for the successful completion of the job! |

TRAIN-THE-TRAINER/TRAIN-THE-EXPERT EVENT IN STEYR |
From April 9th to 11th, 2024, the University of Applied Sciences of Upper Austria (FHOO) was the venue for an important consortium meeting. Under the lead of University of Craiova it also focused on Work Package 3, particularly activities 3.2 and 3.3. detailed review and student evaluation.
The meeting featured a comprehensive peer review by consortium partners of the updated learning materials that address several key competencies. This collaborative examination ensured that the materials meet the high expectations set by the group. Additionally, students from all partner institutions conducted evaluations of these materials. Their feedback was exceptionally valuable, yielding many insightful suggestions and recommendations. Consequently, all partners agreed to revise the educational content to better align with these insights.
Advancements in Training Materials Significant time during the meeting was allocated to discuss the creation of training materials for two new educational modules: Cybersecurity and Greening. The partners established a clear roadmap with specific milestones to develop these modules within the next six months. This plan is designed to keep the project on track and ensure effective results.
Attendees also benefited from a presentation that detailed the impact of cybersecurity on the inland navigation sector. This highlighted the necessity of integrating cybersecurity into the curriculum to equip students with the knowledge to navigate the challenges of this dynamic field. |

A TECHNOLOGY AGNOSTIC DEMO OF A LINK BY VSIGHT |
As part of the train-the-expert STC and VSIGHT prepared a demo of generating digital workflows by means of the VSIGHT platform. Content was used from the INeS platform (how to create knots?). After a briefing the participants could easily generate a workflow and practice on their own. Since this platform is technology agnostic, the teachers and experts in the room could use the RealWear smartglass, or their laptop or even smartphone to try the workflow and see if they would pass the quiz. In this way another link has been showcased in this project between INeS and a learning platform.

3rd TEACHERS CANTEEN (GROWING COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE) |
One of the items organized during the meeting mentioned above in Steyr was the 3rd iwTEACHERScanteen. With this so-called iwTEACHERScanteen, we aim to establish a community of practice where educators, industry, government and other stakeholders come together to share and exchange knowledge. By bringing this group of people together, we aim to promote lifelong learning.
e theme of this iwTEACERScanteen was the trackpilot. The track control assistant currently is the fastest growing tool on board of inland vessels. Over 1.000 in total (supplied by Argonics, Tresco or Shipping Technology) already have been installed. Maritieme Academie Harlingen found the inventor of the trackpilot, Dr Ing Alexander Lutz from Argonics willing to give a presentation on this subject. Alexander explained that he had been working on this development since his student days and took us through the development of the trackpilot. During the presentation, there was a lot of focus on how the trackpilot works, where the data come from, and on the upcoming developments. We only had an hour which seemed to be a bit too short this time. Fortunately, there was time left for Q&A afterwards. This was widely used.
This iwTEACHERScanteen had 36 attendants, a.o. 15 inland navigation teachers, 1 representative of a Ministry, 1 representative of DG Move, 1 representative of CCNR, 1 representative of the industry and some other stakeholders (like from Platform Zero Incidents). Afterwards, we received many positive reactions. See you all at the next iwTEACHERScanteen! |

OUTLOOK TOWARDS THE NEW PROJECT |
The project will be extended until the Winter time. In the new schoolyear we can look forward to a get-together in November organized by Schiffersberuf Kolleg RHEIN in Duisburg. This event will be a train-the-trainer focusing on new modules (a.o. on cybersafety and H2) that will be developed in the coming months.
STC is planning a final event in February 2025 where all deliverables of the project can be presented, the project can be wrapped up and the next steps will be displayed. |
